What is an anomaly scan?

An anomaly scan is a very detailed examination of your baby’s anatomy (body structure). It provides an assessment of your baby’s head, brain, face, spine, heart, stomach, bowels, kidneys, bladder and limbs. This assessment helps to detect foetal anomalies at early stages of pregnancy.
The placenta and amniotic fluid (liquid that surrounds your baby) is also assessed.
Preparing for and during your scan
It is not necessary to have a full bladder. Just drink 1-2 glasses of water before the exam.
For information on how to book an appointment please see the booking and payment page, or contact your nearest centre.
