Breast cancer screening

Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths for women. Successful treatment of breast cancer is linked to an early diagnosis.

UME Diagnostics has an advanced range of imaging equipment which allows us to offer a comprehensive breast imaging service.

Digital Mammography

Mammography is the gold standard in breast imaging and can detect cancer and other problems before lumps become large enough to be felt, as well as assisting in the diagnosis of other breast problems.

Breast Ultrasound

Breast Ultrasound contributes to the diagnosis of breast abnormalities, characterises potential abnormalities and determines if an abnormality is a cancerous tumour or benign cysts. Combining ultrasound and mammography in the breast screening process significantly increases earlier detection of cancers especially amongst women with dense breasts.

Breast MRI

We also offer Breast MRI. This is not a replacement of mammography or ultrasound but an essential supplement tool for detecting and staging breast cancer or other breast abnormalities. Breast MRI is the gold standard of imaging for the assessment of breast implants.

By correlating the patient’s breast MRI with other studies including ultrasound and mammography, we are able to provide the most accurate diagnosis. Bilateral breast MRI technology generates exceptionally detailed images of breast tissues. It is an extremely accurate method of disease detection throughout the breast and surrounding anatomy. MRI scanning determines the extent of the disease bilaterally and reveals lymph node involvement. The goal of this advanced technology is to allow detection of new breast cancers at earlier stages and enhance the management and care of our patients.

Every woman is at risk, however some factors increase a woman’s risk such as:

  • Family history of breast cancer.
  • Not having children.
  • Smoking.
  • Regular drinking of alcohol.
  • Overweight.
  • Past radiation treatment of the chest.

It is advisable for women over 40 to have breast screening every two years continuing long into their 80s.
