Mammography

A mammogram is a low-dose x-ray exam of the breasts. Mammography is the gold standard in breast imaging. Mammography can detect cancer or other problems before a lump becomes large enough to be felt, as well as assist in the diagnosis of other breast problems.
UME Diagnostics has a dedicated team for Women’s Health. Mammography is performed in private, comfortable, relaxing surroundings and use a digital mammography which has many advantages. Firstly, it reduces the x-ray dose. It also means the examination itself is quicker. The image is available within seconds and is of a much higher definition.
The National Cancer Institute (USA) performed a thorough comparison of standard mammography and digital mammography and concluded that digital mammography’s advantages were significant for the following groups of women:
- Under the age of 50 (no matter what level of breast tissue density they had).
- Of any age with heterogeneously (very dense) or extremely dense breasts.
- Pre- or perimenopausal women of any age (defined as women who had a last menstrual period within 12 months of their mammograms).
In addition, UME Diagnostics equipment locates any anomalies very precisely. So if a biopsy needs to be taken, the equipment allows automatic calculation of the co-ordinates of the lesion. This will result in a quicker exam and less discomfort for women.
