Mr Ziali Sivardeen

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon

Ziali Sivardeen was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon at the Homerton University Hospital in 2008. He worked there as the Surgical Lead or Joint Service Lead for the Sports Injury Service from 2009 to 2015.

He is one of only a few Triple Fellowship Trained surgeons in the UK, and has treated many high level athletes and sports professionals, with knee, shoulder or elbow problems.
In the summer of 2012, Mr Sivardeen had the honour and privilege of being appointed as one of an exclusive number of specialist sports surgeons to be involved within the 2012 London Olympics including on site at the state of the art London 2012 athlete’s village, where he provided acute cover to the world’s leading athletes and Olympians.

This involved being a vital member of the dedicated sports surgeons’ team which treated injuries to athletes meaning any athlete needing surgery for any Shoulder and Elbow injury, Mr Sivardeen was the surgeon who performed the surgery. As a vital member of the team of Olympic sports surgeons, Mr Sivardeen was invited to a special reception organised by LOCOG at Buckingham Palace in recognition of his contribution to the athlete’s sports surgery and injury service at the hugely successful London 2012 Olympics.

Mr Sivardeen is heavily involved in training of other specialist surgeons. He has held important positions representing the prestigious Royal Colleges of Surgeons, first as a Tutor from 2010-2014, before being appointed as a Regional Surgical Representative for London. He has worked as a Specialist Training Committee member for both Trauma & Orthopaedics and Sports & Exercise Medicine in London. In 2015, he organised the Teaching Programme for Sports and Exercise Medicine trainees from London, Oxford and Cambridge.

In addition to his significant medical practice and clinical experience, Mr Sivardeen is also considered an academic and expert within his specialisations; therefore he has been invited around the world to deliver lectures, and master classes teaching other surgeons, consultants and practitioners.
His research interests include orthopaedic shoulder and knee problems, including sports injuries in elite rugby players. He has had in excess of 70 papers accepted for presentation at prestigious national and international meetings.

At the main World Shoulder and Elbow Meeting in 2010 held in Edinburgh his research was the only piece from the UK that was short-listed for the best prize and he was invited to give an educational talk at the next World Shoulder and Elbow Meeting (ISCES) held in Japan in 2013. A keen sportsman himself, he has played rugby, football and cricket at various representative levels including rugby at county and university level.
